Our Vision towards a Sustainable Society
Freshwater, land-based RAS offer a viable alternative that allows for the flexibility to construct local aquaculture production systems anywhere, reduces the expense and carbon footprint of transportation, and increases the supply of traceable, nutritious seafood farmed locally near the consumer.
CDEng believes in sustainable manufacturing, and this is the strongest driving force behind this project. Sustainability for us encompasses many aspects, all of which are connected.
For our business, where the quality of our food product is central to our success, the HSE aspects of health is double – both for the personnel working in the facility and the fish living in the system.
The health of the fish living inside the system, and of the people working with these animals, is key to our success. We will involve and integrate with biologists, marine biologists, veterinaries as well as authorities to bring to bear the latest and most proven systems for good, healthy and happy fish over their lifetime.
The system, designed by us, maintain a good environmental control for both the outside world as well as the inside of the manufacturing facility. By utilizing modern RAS technology in combination with state-of-the-art water treatment techniques, the direct impact on natural resources such as lakes and seas are minimized. This through minimizing the needs for incoming and outgoing water to and from our system.
This is done by designing the system to ensure the following key aspects:
- Good material balance and control – incoming vs outgoing flows
- Minimized energy needs – selection of the right equipment and mechanisms.
- Process control to optimize energy usages at the best fish health.
- Outgoing water treated by best available technology to deliver it back to the environment as pure, fresh and biologically stabilized clean water.
- Incoming water treated by sustainable water treatment systems to act as a biological barrier, in both directions.
- Management of fish residues in sustainable ways – fish remains sent for destruction or utilized in fish food manufacturing, removed solids used for biogas or similar.
- Systems designed for neutrality, i.e. minimized amounts of all ingoing and outflowing components (minimized waste such as emissions, pollutants, residues, overcharges, power waste etc.)
Main impacts on the environment are:
- Water consumption
- Power consumption
- Packaging materials
Working with the environmental regulations is a identified opportunity and risk which is something we have been including in our design basis form the very start.
UN Sustainable Development Goals & Government Agenda 2030
The Sustainable Development Goals are the blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all. These 17 goals are set by the United Nations to solve the social challenges by the year of 2030. They address the global challenges we face, including those related to poverty, inequality, climate, environmental degradation, prosperity, peace and justice. The Goals are interconnected, and in order to leave no one behind, it is important that we achieve each Goal and target by 2030.
Agenda 2030 is an agenda from the Swedish government for a change towards a sustainable society and to meet the Sustainable Development Goals set by the UN. Sweden aims towards being in the lead in the implementation of the agenda. The implementation means a gradual conversion of Sweden as a modern and sustainable welfare state, in Sweden and as part of the global system. In their action plan for 2018-2020, the government describes several key actions for sustainable development, which are expected to yield results and effects in the coming years. Sweden's action plan contains key political actions for the years 2018-2020. It also highlights six cross-sectoral focus areas based on the proposal submitted by the Agenda 2030 delegation to the government on 1 June 2017.
CDEng AquaCulture AB meets several goals in UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and government Agenda 2030 but have chosen to highlight only two of these focus areas which are goal 5 Gender Equality and 9 Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure.
Goal 5 Gender Equality
Today most people who work in the fishing industry are men and the gender equality is far behind. The statistics is shown in Figure 1 and is taken from The Swedish Occupational Register with statistics 2016. Total number of workers that the statistic is based on are 200, 300 and 4900 persons.
Our solution is designed and developed in such a way that 95% of the jobs created by the facility are simple jobs which can be performed by men and women of all ages, independent by experience and competence. It creates an equal climate and increases the overall gender equality.
Goal 9 Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
We have identified at least 3 potential patents within detail mechanical and electromechanical engineering for RAS. For the process design we have identified additionally 2 potential patents. With our solution we will also minimize the environmental impact.
